According to the 1940 census, John Wisher, age 49, and his wife Sufrina, age 49, were living in the home they owned ($1500) on The Grove Road in Jay, Essex, New York. Three children were listed: Russell 22, Floyd 12, and Barbara Jean 4.

John H. Whisher, a lifelong resident of Au Sable Forks, died at his home on Monday night, August 29, 1960, in his 69th year, after a long illness. He was born at Au Sable Forks, the son of the late Joseph and Sarah Wood Whisher.
He received his early education in the local schools and became a carpenter by trade, and worked at this profession for many years in the local area.
He was married to Sufrina Soulier, who preceded him in death in December of 1957. Of this union were born six children, Harold of Troy, New York, Russell of Au Sable Forks, Floyd of Schenectady, Mrs. Agnes Ricks of Brooklyn, Mrs. Lucy Hill of Troy and Mrs. Barbara Wood of Plattsburgh. He was also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Bertha Dedrick of Albany, New York, who was caring for him at the time of his death, and Mrs. Mila Hunt of Brooklyn, New York. One brother, Norman Whisher of Au Sable Forks also survived him, besides numerous grandchildren.
The body was waked at his home in the Grove section of Au Sable Forks. Funeral services were conducted at the Holy Name Church at 9:30 a.m. Thursday morning, September 2nd, and interment was in Holy Name Cemetery.
