In the 1970's, he moved to the NH Department of Education, where he remained for the rest of his career, serving in many different departments. At the end of his career, he served for two years as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Education. During his time as an educator, Doug was a member of the Tri State Association of School Business Officials, playing a key role in helping ASBO organize their yearly conference. He continued as a member of ASBO well into his retirement. For his work in education, Doug was awarded the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award in 2009. Continuing to work in education, Doug started Schoolhouse Consulting, providing consulting services to school districts throughout New Hampshire.
He was a lifelong member of the Masons, serving in many capacities at the Harris Lodge in Warner, including Worshipful Master from 1973-76, and receiving the Major General John Sullivan Award. Doug was an avid gardener, as well as a sports fan, regularly attending hockey games at UNH. He was active in town government, serving as treasurer for 15 years of the town water precinct and also as school treasurer.
