Douglas H. Brown, 81, of Contoocook passed away at home the morning of Sunday, May 27th, 2012, surrounded by family.
Born September 3, 1930 in Hudson, to Harold A and Lillian R (Fecteau) Brown, Doug was the oldest of three sons (Duane and David).
After graduating from Nashua High, he attended Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he obtained a degree in education. After college, he served two years in the army in Korea. After his service, he taught at Simonds High School in Warner, eventually becoming principal. In 1965, he met Shirley Ann Croteau of Marlborough, whom he married later that year in Marlborough.
After living briefly in Derry and Warner, they bought a home in Contoocook. Doug moved from being principal, to serving as assistant superintendent and superintendent for the Hopkinton and Hillsboro Public Schools. In the 1970's, he moved to the NH Department of Education, where he remained for the rest of his career, serving in many different departments. At the end of his career, he served for two years as Deputy Commissioner for the Department of Education. During his time as an educator, Doug was a member of the Tri State Association of School Business Officials, playing a key role in helping ASBO organize their yearly conference. He continued as a member of ASBO well into his retirement. For his work in education, Doug was awarded the New Hampshire Excellence in Education Award in 2009. Continuing to work in education, Doug started Schoolhouse Consulting, providing consulting services to school districts throughout New Hampshire.
He was a lifelong member of the Masons, serving in many capacities at the Harris Lodge in Warner, including Worshipful Master from 1973-76, and receiving the Major General John Sullivan Award. Doug was an avid gardener, as well as a sports fan, regularly attending hockey games at UNH. He was active in town government, serving as treasurer for 15 years of the town water precinct and also as school treasurer. He was a longtime member of the Contoocook Methodist Church, serving on many committees.
Survived by his wife, Shirley Ann (Croteau)Brown, of Contoocook; two sons, Stephen A. Brown of Contoocook, and Douglas H. Brown, Jr. and his husband Joseph DePonte of Boston; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, family members and friends.
Calling hours will be held Friday, June 8, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Holt Woodbury Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Henniker NH.
Services will be held Saturday, June 9, at 1 p.m. in the United Methodist Church in Contoocook.
Burial will be in Contoocook Village Cemetery.
