GREENSBORO — Lance J. Spencer died on Friday, September 10, 2010 at Covenant Healthcare in Saginaw, Michigan. Funeral services will be held on Friday, September 17, 2 p.m. at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. Burial with full military honors will follow at Guilford Memorial Park.
Lance was born on May 7, 1923 in Dickenson County, VA, son of the late Lanis Spencer and Belle Long. He and brother Maynard enjoyed a professional music career as "The Spencer Brothers" and wrote the traditional music standard "Mother's Just Sleeping." Their acceptance to The Grand Ole Opry was interrupted by WW II when both brothers joined the US Marine Corps.
As a long time member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lance held many state and national positions and honors including the Pilgrim Degree. Here he met many of his lifelong friends and retired as Grand Herder for the national organization.
Lance was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Margie Woodford Spencer. He is survived by his brother, Dewey Maynard Spencer of Florida; two sisters, Janice Campbell and husband Sam of Ohio and Ruth Carter of Saxapahaw, NC; two sons; Jeff Spencer and wife Nita, Brad Spencer and wife Tally; two granddaughters, Diana Spencer Link and husband Chris and Janie Spencer. Lance is also survived by his wife Irene E. Jones-Spencer of Michigan.
A long time resident of Greensboro, Burlington and Reidsville, Lance excelled as a musician, soldier, leader and family man. Those who knew and loved him will agree with the statement he made in his last days, "It's been a big show."
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Friday at Hanes Lineberry Sedgefield Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice.
