HIGGINS, Richard Allan Of Pompano Beach, FL, and formerly of Boston, MA, passed away October 19, 2016. Dick was born September 7, 1932 in Marblehead, MA, to Attorney Allan H.W. Higgins and Mildred Bradshaw (Higgins) Houghton. He grew up in Marblehead, Newton Center, Reading, and Newton Highlands, MA. Dick graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1950, Harvard University in 1954, and Harvard Law School in 1957. While an undergraduate at Harvard, he worked on the lighting for Hasty Pudding Club productions. Dick was an avid rower, earning varsity letters in crew at Exeter his junior and senior years and crewing on Harvard teams that competed in the annual Harvard-Yale Regattas held on the Thames River in New London, CT. He was also a member of the Boston Union Boat Club crew that made it into the semifinals of England's Henley Royal Regatta on the Thames River in 1959. Growing up, Dick spent summers at Camp Monomoy for Boys, East Brewster, MA (now the Cape Cod Sea Camps), and he was in charge of the sailing program there in the late 1940s. He also managed the Sea Cliff Inn at Nantucket, MA, for two summers. As a young man Dick served in the National Guard, and after passing the Massachusetts Bar he practiced law in Boston for more than 20 years. Dick was a talented piano player with an infectious enthusiasm for music, especially jazz, and he had an extensive collection of recordings. For his sister's young children, he was a larger-than-life figure who brought a spirit of adventure to every family visit.
In addition to his parents, Dick was predeceased by his stepmother Lou Cole Johnston Higgins of Pompano Beach, FL. He leaves his sister Audrey Higgins Rich of East Longmeadow, MA; his nephew James Allan Rich of East Longmeadow, MA; his niece Marilyn Ruth Rich of Eagle Creek, OR; his niece Karen Rich and her husband Christopher Fecteau of New York, NY; his cousin Eleanor Restall Braiman of Greensboro, NC, her three children and their families; his aunt Phyllis Bradshaw Shirley of Springfield, MA, and her three children: Carol Woodruff of Long Beach, CA, Jim Shirley of Springfield, MA, and David Shirley of Enfield, CT; and cousin June Baughman of Sagamore Hills, OH. Mr. Higgins' family would like to thank the staff of Manor Oaks Nursing Home in Ft. Lauderdale, FL, for their compassionate care during the last two years of Dick's life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Broward Outreach Center, P.O. Box 220490, Hollywood, FL 33022-0490. Private services will be held at a later date.
