RENSSELAER -- Roselle H. Lithgow, of East St., Rensselaer, passed away peacefully at St. Peter's Hospital on Monday, May 23, 2005.
Born in the Arbor Hill neighborhood of Albany, Roselle was the loving daughter of Delia King from County Roscommon in Ireland and Cornelius J. Heffernan of Albany. She graduated from St. Joseph's Academy in Albany after concentrating in academic studies featuring four years of Latin and English, mathematics, business and the sciences. After graduation, she obtained a civil service appointment in the New York State Museum, working as a stenographer with the museum's scientists who researched and managed the exhibits on archeology, entomology, natural history, wildlife and Native Americans. Roselle retired in 1965, returning in October 2004 to participate in an internal study project about former staff employees. After moving to Rensselaer in the late 1940s, Roselle became a communicant of St. John the Evangelist Parish, where she was an active longtime participant in the parish's rosary and altar society and choir. She was also an enthusiastic participant in the Mother's Club of St. John's Academy and a den mother with the Cub Scouts of America, as well as a poll worker and member of the Rensselaer Democratic Club. Roselle also held memberships in the Catholic Daughters of America, the Rensselaer Business and Professional Women's Club and was a volunteer worker for many years with the Franciscan Mission House in Rensselaer.
Roselle was the widow of William B. Lithgow, former alderman for the third ward of Rensselaer during the administration of Mayor Clarence McNally. She is survived by her two sons, William J. and Thomas R. Lithgow; her grandson, Colin W. Lithgow and daughter-in-law Emily G. Lithgow, all of Rensselaer. Her surviving sister is Mrs. Mary Mele of Albany. Roselle's late siblings were Cornelius Heffernan, Mrs. Florence Reynolds and Mrs. Margaret Pollard, all of Albany, and Mrs. Catherine Facteau of Troy.
Family and friends are invited to call at the W.J. Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue in Rensselaer on Tuesday evening from 4:00 to 8:00. The Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered at St. John the Evangelist Church, Herrick St., Rensselaer at 10:30 on Wednesday morning. Interment will be in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, East Greenbush.
