Marvin W. Essex, 81, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, with his loving family at his side.
Born Feb. 1, 1933, in Providence, R.I., he was the son of the late Everett and Corinne (Cote) Essex. He attended Providence public schools and La Salle Academy.
During the Korean War, knowing he would soon be drafted, he married Charlotte, the love of his life Nov. 15, 1952. Their first child, Carol Ann, was born a year later while her father was stationed with the U.S. Army in Korea.
For 32 years, he worked for First National Supermarkets, starting as a stock boy at 15 and eventually as manager of stores around Rhode Island. He then worked at independent grocers before retiring and moving to South Hadley.
Marvin was a hard worker who was devoted to his family and well liked for his easygoing personality and sense of humor. He loved to sing, was an avid walker, and followed the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Charlotte (Rettenmyer) Essex; daughter Carol Kostek and her husband Richard of Hadley; son David and his wife Elizabeth White of Peterborough, N.H.; sister Marilyn Fecteau and her husband Joseph "Ray" Fecteau of Vernon, Conn.; grandsons Robert, Jacob and Ethan Essex of New Hampshire; and several cousins, and numerous nieces and nephews.Calling hours are Thursday, April 3, from 4 to 7 p.m.Marvin's funeral will be Friday at 9 a.m. from the Ahearn Funeral Home, 783 Bridge Road, Northampton, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Most Holy Redeemer Church, 140 Russell Road, Hadley. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 p.m. in the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, Main Street, Agawam.
