obituary - The Republican (Springfield, MA) - 12 June 2015
Gerald J. Canterbury, 92, of Chicopee passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 11, 2015. Gerald was born in Springfield in 1923 to the late Justin and Ellen (Fitzgerald) Canterbury. Gerald was a proud veteran who served in the Army during WWII. After the war he married the one and only love of his life, Florence, or “Flo” as he affectionately called her, who died unexpectedly at the young age of 29. Gerald’s love for her remained constant and true, never marrying again. Many will fondly remember Gerald from both the Springfield Armory and the United States Post Office, where he worked until his retirement. Gerald was a kind man who loved to dance, play practical jokes, and enjoyed the holidays with the excitement of a 5 year old. He was also an avid fisherman, a terrific ping-pong player and a competitive card player. In addition to his parents and wife Florence (Comtois) Canterbury, Gerald was predeceased by his daughter Mary Elizabeth Canterbury, a son-in-law Thomas Sanocki, and his sister Catherine Schuhmann. Gerald is survived and dearly missed by his son Kevin Canterbury and his wife Diana of Barre, MA., three daughters; Christine Sanocki of Chicopee, Catherine Fecteau and her husband Thomas of Lancaster, PA. and Joan C. Canterbury of Chicopee, five grandchildren; Danielle, Matthew, Daniel, Lauren and Kate, and four great-grandchildren; Alex, Anna, Nathan and Caitlin. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 16th from 9:30 to 11am at Sampson’s Chapel of the Acres, 21 Tinkham Rd, Springfield. A Liturgy of Christian burial will follow at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at 12pm, 417 Boston Rd., Springfield MA. Internment services and military honors will follow at St. Michael’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family kindly asks that memorial donations be made to St. Jude Children Research Hospital at 501 St. Jude Pl. Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
