      WILLIMANTIC - Leo R. J. Adams, 88, of Willimantic, beloved husband of Laurianne ( Rondeau) Adams , died Friday, May 26, 2006 in Haven Health Center of Windham. He was born September 3, 1917 in Manchester, NH, the son of Donat and Lucia ( Fecteau ) Adams. Leo had owned and operated Willimantic Power Equipment for 15 years, retiring in 1985. He served in the Navy for 30 years, retiring with the rank of Chief Machinist Mate. During World War II, he was on the Yorktown at the battle of Midway. Once ordered to abandon ship he left her, but then volunteered to return to the ship to try and save her. He was ordered to evacuate a second time and was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in battle. Leo was a member of the V. F. W. Gold Star Post 1724, the American Legion James J. Shea Post 19, a life member of the Willimantic Elks and a communicant of St. Joseph Church. Besides his wife, his survivors include a sister, Lorraine Duchesneau and her husband, Bob of Mansfield; four nephews and several grandnieces and grandnephews. His Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at 10 am in St. Joseph Church in Willimantic. Burial, with full military honors, will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery in Windham. Calling hours are Tuesday from 6 to 8 pm and again Wednesday from 9: 00 to 9: 30 am to the Bacon Funeral Home, 71 Prospect St., Willimantic. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
